A while ago I said I had an art student who works for me who has very 'rpg' friendly artwork? Well I spoke to her about getting people who might want to commission her work or even buy it off the shelf to be able to see her work. And eventually she has provided me with the pictures.
Oh boy

Have a gander at these (well, except the first two, which are stuff I whipped up for forums etc.). She has NO IDEA what she should charge for a commission or an off-the-shelf, so any guidance would probably be useful as well.
I love them

Lots of money! Seriously

Lots of money!
Seriously those are some very nice bits of art, and very game friendly. Of the shelf I could easily see her charging £30-60 a piece depending on how high-res the originals are.
Were they commission pieces?

These were the pieces she brought in as interview fodder when I was recruiting a graphic designer. They are part of her uni Fine Art coursework I think.

The reason I ask is that to me I'll pay more for a well executed comission than the same artwork not to order.
Having said that these pieces really are in fine art territory, rather than illustration, where prices are far higher depending on the format they are produced in

She should figure how much
Submitted by Ben Clapperton on Mon, 18/02/2008 - 18:33.
She should figure how much her time is worth to her and how much the materials cost and price it according to that. If she gets more requests than she can handle then she isn't charging enough.
They're really good

Price-wise, everything's very variable, I think.
As a guide, I've paid £25 ($50, actually) for an A4 piece of cover art, in colour. I gather I got that cheap. I'd happily give similar amounts for that art: I imagine other people would give more.

Cheap Indeed

Cheap isn't the word there, Graham. I've never seen cover art of any quality sell for less than $150 and that was cheap. $50 is extremely cheap for interior colour work, and reasonable even for greyscale work.
The portfolio artwork is extremely good, but I don't think anyone could (or should) put that amount of work into a piece for the kind of money available in the RPG industry, or at least the Indie RPG industry. Me, I'd be happy to adopt ALL of those images if they were on offer at a sum I could afford, I'd just have to write a game around them. However if I was going to commission, I'd want very specifically to know how much it would cost, and what level of quality I could expect for that money. Portfolio pieces are great, but I prefer to see stuff that has been done under commission when I'm looking to commission someone. People are wont to spend more time and effort on things they've done themselves than they do on things that they're not being paid enough for ;)
Any chance you could get her to pass on some more concrete guidelines for commission costs, or for printing rights of the existing art? I can think of uses for any one of those pictures.

...but here's some actual data: http://www.theaoi.com/Mambo/index.php?option=content&task=view&id=413&Itemid=65
For roleplaying games you can just about halve/quarter all those figures. For indie games you can halve/quarter them again.

Thanks Jon, those are very interesting figures.
I agree with Ash, those peices are probably too good for the RPG industry, in that most of us just don't have the budget to pay for art of that quality at anything like a reasonable rate.
More actual data. Starblazer adventures has an estimated first run of around 1500 copies. I was paid £50 per A4 page for interior black and white illustrations. Obviously the rates you have linked to are higher, but I suspect the print runs are higher too.

Yeah as mentioned, you need to quarter/eighth those AOI figures for small presses like Cubicle 7.
I think we need to be careful about what we mean when we say those pieces are too good for rpgs. They are probably too good for very small budgets. With respect to the fact they are nice pieces, I don't think they are good enough for the big players, given what they look for.
CE=! the rpg industry.

When I told her that someone would be willing to pay even as little as £25-50 for the right to use the art she was pretty stunned. I don't think she has ever thought of using any of it commerically. I'm going to meet up with her later this week and have a chat about some commissioned stuff because I am such a visual monkey that a nice piece might fire a lapsed project like MI:666 into action. I wonder if she does Napoleonic pieces ... hmmm.
Regardless I'll pass on the feedback
Personally there are some of those pieces that I think would look perfectly placed as covers for a number of small press rpgs and better than some of the stuff that I have seen by miles. Ah, artistic interpretation - don't you just love it?
Neil
ps. I just got a mail from her saying that these were her older 'less good' pieces. *rolls eyes*

...but hey, I guess the galleries these pictures belong in are too full of piles of rubbish, dripping taps, inflatable fingers-of-god, half-cows preserved in perspex, and other such rubbish to fit any real talent through the doors.
Damnit, if I ever win a billion in the lottery I'm opening a gallery that only accepts REAL art!

I just had a chat with Kati and well ... I think there was some Geordie/Finnish confusion. She seemed quite bemused still that people would be willing to pay for her work and she had no real concept of what a commission would entail until I explained. Anyway, she said to pass on her email and if anyone wants to contact her to do some work or to make an offer on any of the pieces, then cool beans
