Vincent Baker has announced a new store-front thing for independent publishers. Go and look! It's impressive.
All this links up with The New Thing. Go and look at that too, although the thread is rather impenetrable.
Basically, then, the whole thing works as follows:
1. Someone buys your book from the Unstore.
2. You say to a fulfiller: hey, send a copy of my book out!
3. The fulfiller sends a copy of your book out. (You've sent them a stock in advance).
4. You pay the fulfiller a dollar per book.
This is worth looking at! Go and look at it. Not just if you're a Collective Endeavour person, but if you're any sort of independent publisher.
Two more quick points about fulfillment:
1. The hidden advantage, to us in the UK, is that the fulfiller can be based in the US. This saves shipping costs: you ship the US fulfiller a stock of books and they send them out to US addresses. There's no need for every US customer to pay shipping costs from the UK.
2. I'm going to be a fulfiller. I'm mainly doing this for the folks in the US, so they get to save on overseas shipping for orders to the UK. If you'd like me to send out your books, get in touch. My email is the best way: username grahamcwalmsley, and it's a Gmail account.

It's worth noting that you don't need step 2,3 or 4. You can be your own fullfiller quite happily.
I, for example, have a stock of books at my flat, and go to the post office regularly to post Ebay and Amazon items, so I am doing my own fulfillment just as if someone had bought directly from my website.
