So I have been beavering away on Reel Adventures recently and it is shaping up to be really good. Down at Conception I had a couple of playtests that really showed me what was missing and what needed to be chucked:
Applause: This was an attempt to make the players jump more into action due to the fact that there was little incentive to create resources and win the action scenes as it increased your stake danger. This is now gone as it was far too complicated, way too much book keeping post scene. It has now been replaced by..
Stake Danger: Danger to stakes was always there but now it increases slowly over the course of the film, at the beginning of each act, giving it 3 danger at least by the end of the film. The nemesis can also increase the danger to the stake by attacking the heroes. You can reduce stake danger by triumphing in a piece of action, meaning you need resources to do that and have to engage in action.
and
Resources: the number of these is now limited to 5 and they do not increase your stake when they are created. They can no longer be boosted and they now give 1, 2 and 3 cards the first, second and third time they are used. This means there is more incentive to create them in the first and second acts so that by the time you get to the finale they are at full strength.
The second playtest at conception convinced me this was the right way to go, but hopefully Scott can speak to that as he was one of the players.
Colour and Action scenes: these are the two focuses a scene can take, colour scenes being just about character development and story wheras action scenes primary focus is having a chase, fight or equivalent. In colour scenes the threat from the nemesis does not increase and players can just flesh out the story. They can still create resources.
Everything else is pretty much as was and I only need a few more playtest to be sure everything is solid. On that note..
Anyone want to help with a playtest or two? I literally need only 3 or 4 more to confirm a couple of minor changes. Any help you fine folks could give me would be much appreciated.
Cheers
Iain
