Now there's a couple of ways we could get there from the Frozen North, both of which are going to take a while, so the question is: is Games Expo worth the visit for people who have only dabbled with card games and don't do much board gaming?

RPGs as well of course.

From the past two, it feels like an event that's based around the trade halls, compared to something like Furnace or Continuum that's based around the game-playing. If that makes sense. Similar kind of style to Dragonmeet.
So if you want to stock up on new shiny it's great. If people you want to see are there it's good. If you're just going to play I'd look at the costs carefully.

It's a trade-centric event.
Gaming is present, and the RPG side was better last year than the first year, but still isn't as good as a play-centric event.

To be honest, unless we can get to places for entire weekends, we usually don't game (unless there's something really cool that catches our eye once we get anywhere). We tend to go for saying hi to friends, panels and acquiring bright shiny things.
Its not too far from my folks, so if they aren't sick of the sight of us by then, we may well give it go ;)

The expo is the only event I attend - I don't play games at cons, but I like to spend a bit of gaming cash, and that's the best place I've been to for it. Saying that, I buy a lot of boardgames, and that certainly seems to be where the focus is.
Cheers,
Greg

I can't get there this year, but expect D101 Games next year with a stall full of shiny books and a weekend of demo games :)
If Mrs Newt wasn't expecting Newtlet #2, I had plans to go this year and had started talking with one of the organisers, Richard Denning who was a joy to deal with. Prices for a stall where very reasonable and the traders info he sent me was one of the clearest and straight forward I've ever received from a con.

We certainly think so - being the organisers ;-)
This year we have upto 20 RPG tables at any given time running 50+ RPG games over 7 sessions from noon Friday through to Sunday.

I think this year folk will feel that RPG has caught up with board games
and is solidly a major part of the show.

Just to update: this year we offer more games over a longer period than before.
For the really keen roleplayers you can get in up to 28 hours of Roleplaying, go through the Living Dungeon Live action event, play some
free form RPG, meet the creator of Eberron and RPG publishers Cubicle 7,
Triple Ace Games, Mongoose Publishers and Collective Endeavour, hang
out at the Yoggie Stand and buy your miniatures, dice and books.
So I can say - yes for the Roleplayer there is plenty to do.
