Following the launch at Furnace, the Wordplay RPG is now available:

What may be of interest here, beyond the game itself, is that the rules are released under a creative commons licence.

Thanks Dom. I was fumbling

Thanks Dom. I was fumbling with my Collective Endeavour account and you've beaten me to it.

I'd like to say a big thanks to all the encouragement and advice I have received from members here. I plan to follow up this release with the main book next year. This will have five settings and lovely artwork.

I've released the game under the most generous of CC licences. Essentially attribute the author and then do whatever you like with the text, including selling it on if you wish. I'll be updating the download text sometime soon.

Thanks again,

Graham

Hey Graham, that's great to see. I look forward to checking it out.

I'd certainly be interested in know the whys and wherefores of your decision to use a very broad CC license for Wordplay. What were the decisions that moved you towards this, how do you see it impacting the future direction of your own work with the game? I'd certainly be interested in hearing more about your thoughts on this.

Cheers

Designer's Notes

Dom Mooney's picture

I know Graham is tied up at the moment, so may not have seen this, but I think that this extract from the designer's notes for Wordplay is telling:

Quote:

In setting out to write Wordplay I also wanted to give something back to a hobby that I have enjoyed for more than twenty years. I wanted the core text of the game to be freely and easily shareable so that anyone could pick up the game, play it, adapt it and publish it should they so choose. To achieve this, the core rules of the game and a number of the Themes are provided with the most generous of Creative Commons licences.

The (cc) licence basically requires attribution plus the use of a Wordplay logo, plus a copy to Graham. Logo isn't specified in how prominent it should be.

Thanks Dom and Hi Malcolm,

I wanted to maximise Wordplay's potential as a springboard for other peoples' creativity. As such I've essentially put the text 'out there' so others can effectively use and adapt it for there own purposes. Already there are four or five writers who are thinking how they might publish their own books using Wordplay, or their variant of it, as the core ruleset.

For me it was about creating and sharing, enabling others to pick up from where I left off and make something of their own, something more.

My 6x9 core rulebook turned out well thanks to Dom's excellent layout. It's also competitively priced. Next year I hope to publish that expanded edition with extra Themes (that will remain copyright of the owners) and possibly full colour.

I've had such a lot of fun with this. I've also now got a game that I love to use for any genre that I care to bring to the table. Win! :)
