[Mob Justice] Brothers in Arms - getting the boys together

Iain McAllister's picture

So I am running a con game down at Furnace based on the idea of Irish Brothers out for vengeance. My game prep has been ‘lacking of late’ so I am hoping you guys can help me out.

This post will focus on the four brothers, and making them into interesting protagonists that people can engage with. I haven’t named them yet, just going for mechanical detail and background at the mo. All the loyalties, tells and codes are ranked from ace(low) to king(high). I have not quite decided on skill sets for them as yet, hopefully that will come out of any resulting discussion. Skills should allow for multiple solutions of the same problem in my mind, and also allow each player to have their moment to shine during the game.

Eldest
29, has a family, two kids and is trying to take charge of the situation. Easy to anger, impulsive a Sonny (godfather) kind of character. Oldest regards youngest as someone he should look out for and is probably closest to him. Also has strong loyalties to the middle 2, basically he is the thing that is holding them together at the moment.

Loyalties
Youngest Q
Middle 1 10
Middle 2 10

Codes
Protect the family business 10
Avenge my father’s death K

Tells
His wife and kids K
Mother J
Father K

Skills

Middle Twins

Middle 1
Works at a dead end job. Maybe a waiter looking to be an actor. He has turned to drug dealing to fund the lifestyle he thinks he should have. Believes very much in the American Dream and will do anything to achieve it. Never really got on with his father.

Loyalties
Oldest 8
Youngest J
Middle 2 Q

Codes
Don’t let my fiancée find out about my illicit activities 7
Avenge my father’s death 10
Live the American dream J

Tells
His fiancée 8
Mother K
Father 5

Skills
Social
Up Close and Personal

Contacts
Drug Dealer
Police informant

Middle 2
The more successful of the twins, a professional of some description, lawyer etc. Still loves the family but has been trying to distance themselves of late. Has connections to the mob through work and also keeps an eye on their twin, who has been going down a bad route.

Loyalties
Youngest 8
Middle 1 8
Oldest 8

Codes
Avenge my father’s death 10
Protect the family business 6
Protect my business from association with criminal elements K

Tells
Mother
Father

Youngest
Looks up to the oldest of the brothers, maybe has a crush on his wife. He is kind of wayward, taking after the Middle 1 brother, and has recently begun to get involved with the street gangs that the Mafia use for recruitment. Doesn’t really think much of the Middle 2 brother. Very much a mummy’s boy but always clashed with his father.

Loyalties
Oldest J
Middle 1 8
Middle 2 4

Codes
Avenge my father’s death 10
Protect the family business 4
Look out for myself before anyone else 10

Tells
Mother 9
Father 7

Skills
Up Close and Personal
Knowledge(Mafia)
Patch em’ up

Contacts
Street Gang Leader

So this is the skeleton I am going to build the rest of the game around. Feedback welcome.

Cheers

Oh, cool beans.

I find for con games it's good to give each character a little paragraph (maybe even just a sentence or two) about how they view the other characters. That could work really strongly here, as its reinforced with a mechanical flag.

I like how you have some mismatched loyalties too!

If you're going to give out 20 skill points then I'd recommend marking out 16 and leaving 4 for allocation by the players. With a maximum of 5 in a skill I wouldn't give anyone a skill above 4, though they could choose to put it that way with their extra points. I'd give them a couple of interesting tangential skills at 2, so that a player could potentially stick a few points into one of them if it really caught their eye.

I'm superkeen to see how this goes at Furnace, though I won't be there myself.

For a con game I think it's

For a con game I think it's best to start at a point of crisis (you cradle your father in your arms as he breathes his last...)

Get the party together and keep them together, play down the PvP frictions, as it's likely the players won't know each other.

Throw out lots of bangs (the business gets firebombed, bent copper arrest the PCs...etc).

Have a pre-planned plot and backstory that the PCs feel their way into. Don't expect the players to get the use of story chips until the later stages of the game.

Crisis
Bang (wee fight to learn combat mechanics)

Great idea joe, thanks for that. Going to work on a basic plot synopsis today and post it up tonight or tomorrow for feedback.
