Dear all,
I've bodged together the layout for Umläut using Word. I have Publisher, but I've never used it and didn't have time to learn it before the contest deadline. Anyone got any mad publisher skillz and doesn't mind doing a basic layout job on the text if I send you the Word file? Once the basic template is in place I can edit and tweak it, I just can't get the overall templates set up.
Anyone help me out? I'll owe you a pint!

No problem.
Send it along.
Oh, hang on.

I better check I have Publisher on my computer at home! (I think I have it.) You want it layed out in Publisher, right? And the publisher file sent back to you so that in your copy of Publisher you can fix it?
(I use InDesign these days, but used Publisher to do Howl magazine amongst other things many moons ago.)

Until I can afford better, Publisher is my weapon of choice.
So if Gregor has any problems I'll do it.

I don't have it, as it's Windows only. Dammit.
Over to the Prince.

As an alternative you might like to try: you can go to www.freeserifsoftware.com and get a cut-down version of Serif PagePlus DTP software for nothing. Or, if you poke around in the links there, you can order PagePlus 9 for about £10, which is what I'd suggest.

PagePlus

PagePlus is one that I've heard good shout-outs for before, especially for someone on a budget.
However, in this case I think Rich's problem is that he doesn't have the time to dedicate to figuring out how any software works. He'd rather just get someone who finds it trivial to do the layout, and he can then edit from there.
(Damn, I remember back in the day laying stuff out on the Amiga 500 too. Sheesh.)
Thanks everyone! Tim,

Thanks everyone!
Tim, Gregor's right, I just don't have the time right now to get my head around a new app from scratch. I have Publisher on my laptop, although I've never used it. I'm sure I can muddle through making edits to an existing document (that is, cut and paste stuff that's already formatted the way I need something done and then edit the text).
The main thing is that I can have an up to date playtest document that looks half decent for Conception in 2 weeks. There are a handful of changes I want to make before then, and I'd like to be able to update a decently laid out version.
If/When I look to create a more "finished" version for possible publication, I'll look at other apps. I'll have more time then.
Joe, I'll email the Word version over to you today. Cheers mate!
(For what it's worth, the cover, cards and character sheet were all done using Corel Draw, which I've used for bloody ages.)

Oh, sure, I was more responding to people who sounded like they were stuck with MS Publisher. I don't know what it can *actually* do, but the couple of times I've opened it on other folks' computers there seemed so little clue as to using the thing that I just shut it down again. But then I've been using PagePlus for years. (Be wary of PP 11, by the way - buggy.)

And I today realize where I've seen and opened a newish version of Publisher... on my work PC.
Sigh.

Well, I've gone and done it now. Having no real idea what I'm doing, I've went for Tim's suggestion of PagePlus 9.
Hopefully, the instructions are at Chimpanzee level...I could probably just about cope with that.

I'm open for a reasonable amount of questionage by email or something. I've no idea what the instructions are like - I've been using it for *gulp* over 10 years, man, boy and newt.
