One way to run your art department

Jon Hodgson's picture

Hey All. Had a few jars with Mr Craig last night and got all enthusiastic about CE again. Let the good times roll.

Thought I'd put hands to keyboard to write a piece about one possible way to run the basic processes in your art department. And even if you're just one guy I still think it can pay to think about an art department - those moments when you have the Art Director's hat on. What I'm laying out here isn't meant to be definitive by any manner or means. Its just how I most often work with a wide variety of companies both large and small, in and outside of gaming.

[Art] Payment

As a writer, I'm incredibly lucky to have a creative partner a fantastically talented artist in the form of Paul Bourne. Paul and I have been friends for many years and have worked together on CGS stuff since the very start. It's an equal partnerhsip, both giving input into the creative process. Now, the reason I mention this is in regard to the sourcing and payment for artwork in game publications.

As we are both partners in CGS, I don't have to allocate specific budget for art. However, I do know what many people are not in this enviable position. Some are lucky enough to be talented artists as well as writers and designers (I'm thinking of Gregor Hutton in particular here), but in the main, most designer will have to source artwork from someone with the necessary skills.

The proof of the art book arrived today, and I must say I am extremely happy with it. There are a few thing to tidy up and adjust, but other than that it is ready to go. With any luck it will be available for Dragonmeet.

I will post some previews and a bit of press stuff when I get the final copies through.

Cheers

Paul

Public Domain art work?

Newt Newport's picture

Hi

Has anyone any experience with this beyond what clipart.com has to offer?

I'm currently working out what I need artwise for Monkey, and it strikes me that there's allot of old Chinese art available that is probably in the public domain. Problem is sourcing 300dpi versions.

Any suggestions?
